The Murfreesboro City Council approved an assessment plan for a new transit facility Thursday night.

Traffic Department Director Dana Richardson presented a quote for services of $57,800 by Wilbur Smith & Associates to assess square footage needs of the city's transit system staff and equipment. With generous state and federal grants, the cities part came to only $5,800.

Richardson told the council a move will become necessary to keep up with the cities growth and expanding transit needs.

"We've been operating out of the back of a garage out on Florence Rd. and we are looking to expand into a better facility," Richardson told the council.

Richardson said Transit is looking within a one mile radius of downtown Murfreesboro to help fill vacant buildings or empty lots.

The city council also approved sign ordinance changes to account for changing definitions and newer changeable copy sign technologies. The changes also increase the number of signs in new zones while carrying the same restrictions.

Sign ordinance changes combine three sections of the sign ordinance to maintain constant size and designs in the zones. A refundable $75 inspection fee will now be applied to all new sign permits. Inflatable signs will be allowed for three days. Sign uses will be restricted in GDO zoned properties.

The city council also took up a measure to apply separation distances for liquor store retailers in the city's Murfreesboro City Code.

The distances amendment follows the council's inquiry into the matter after a local businessman requested zoning for a liquor store near a church and residential properties.
