City Streets Dept. asks for more salt

All the recent wintry weather has taken its toll on Murfreesboro’s salt supply.

So far Murfreesboro has seen about 7 inches of snow and winter isn’t over yet.

All the snow has used up more than half the city’s salt supply with most of it used during the snowstorm the weekend of Jan. 29-30.

“Approximately two years ago, after s severe winter storm, we used our entire reserve of salt and were told by all of the suppliers, that due to demand, we could not purchase additional salt,” Murfreesboro Street Department Director Rick Templeton said.

And Templeton doesn’t want to be in that position again.

So, he wants to buy 875 tons of roadway salt for almost $58,000, 66 percent of which will be reimbursed by TDOT, to make sure roads in the city stay clear through the end of winter.

Murfreesboro City Council will vote on the issue at its Thursday night meeting.
