Some Murfreesboro City Schools students may have new classrooms and schools next year, should a plan to rezone two schools passed the school board Tuesday night.

Murfreesboro’s Board of Education will consider moving students from Scales Elementary and John Pittard Elementary at its next board meeting.

The proposed rezoning would affect 74 students from Scales and 79 students from Pittard.

The proposal for Scales would move students who live east of South Church Street to Bradley Academy, Black Fox Elementary or Hobgood Elementary.

Twenty Scales students, living east of South Church Street, south of Middle Tennessee Boulevard and west of Bradyville Pike, will be rezoned to Black Fox Elementary.

Fifteen Scales students, living east of South Church, north of Middle Tennessee Boulevard and west of Broad Street, will be rezoned to Bradley.

Seventeen Scales students, living north of Bradyville Pike, east of Middle Tennessee Boulevard, south of Mars Street and west of South Baird Lane, will be rezoned to Hobgood.

The proposal for Pittard would move students, who live north of Osborne Lane and within the city limits and those who live east of Sulphur Springs Road, north of West Primm Lane and south of Bridget Drive, to Erma Siegel Elementary.

Rising fifth- and sixth-grade students and their siblings from both schools will be offered a grandfather option, but parents will have to provide transportation to and from school.

MCS Administrative Services Director Gary Anderson said previously both Pittard and Scales are both high growth zones and the schools need to be rezoned to make more space in the classrooms.

“The schools aren’t overcrowded,” he said. “We’re just trying to keep them from becoming that way.”

Both schools are designed to hold up to 1,000 students and both schools are quickly approaching that mark.

When Pittard opened last year, students were rezoned from Reeves-Rodgers, which became the Discovery School, and Erma Siegel Elementary. The school now has 964 students.

Anderson said the proposals will give the board a few more years before having to build another schools or look at rezoning again.
