Murfreesboro Board of Education wants to fill the interim director post by the time current Director of Schools Marilyn Mathis steps down Oct. 1.
The board met with Art Jones from Hazard, Young, Attea & Associates Tuesday night to decide the best course of action to take in filling the interim director and, eventually, the director positions.
In the end the board voted 4-3 to fill the interim director’s position by Oct. 1 with someone from outside of the school system.
But, as the vote says, not all the board members agreed.
“I would like to leave the door open for both internal and external candidates, because there may be internal candidates who wish to further their leadership experience. … I would not like to close the door on a qualified candidate,” Board member Nancy Phillips said.
MCS released the following statement Wednesday afternoon:
The Murfreesboro City School Board is seeking an interim director effective Oct. 1. Interested candidates are required to submit a resume and letter defining their interest in this position via email, mail or fax to Hazard, Young, Attea & Associates, 1151 Waukegan Rd, Suite 200, Glenview, IL 60025, ATTN: Dr. Art Jones; www.hyasupersearches.com; Fax (847) 724-8467.
Applicants must possess a baccalaureate degree. The deadline for receipt of materials outlined above is Sept. 15.

After an interim director is selected, the board would like to have a permanent director in place by Dec. 15.
Jones will lead the search, which will start with focus group interviews by the end of the month.
The consultant will meet with representatives from individual schools in the city system, various PTOs and other stakeholders, like the Murfreesboro City Council and local businesses.
