Murfreesboro City Schools only added three students, according to the official enrollment numbers for the beginning of the 2008-09 school year.
Surprisingly, the number is fairly steady showing 7,255 students in the system, which is only three students more than last year.
“I don’t think that hurts We’ve been opening a school up about every year,” said Cheryl Harris, MCS spokes woman, adding it will save the system some money not having to accommodate extra students.
At the beginning of the last school year, the system reported a population of 7,252, which was a 4.2 percent increase over 2006-07’s enrollment figures of 6,949 students.
Murfreesboro has seen overcrowding in the past in older schools that were built for smaller student populations. But with the stable enrollment numbers and addition of John Pittard Elementary School last year, the system can keep the student-teacher ratio low.
Across the board schools have added or lost a handful of student here or there, with the exception of Erma Siegel Elementary, which saw a 119 student drop from last year.
Harris explained some of the kids who attended last year were grandfathered in because they had siblings attending the school when Pittard opened last year and others were rezoned to Mitchell-Neilson Elementary or Primary.

I say with pride and honor that I got to drive with the city school system until the interm showed up. Reorganizing started to take place and I lost out.
