Murfreesboro’s Urban Environmental Department (UED) invites community participation in a project that will utilize recycled materials to create ornaments for this year’s Christmas tree in the City Hall Rotunda.

Murfreesboro’s UED is responsible for the holiday display in the rotunda again this year and it has come up with a little something different, department secretary Ashlee McDaniel said recently.

This year’s tree will be salvaged from a construction site, sparing it from the chipper for the time being, and creatively decorated to enhance the holiday décor for 2008 and be “green” at the same time.

During November, snowman ornaments made from recycled materials will be accepted at the department’s 351 Overall St. facility, she said. Donated ornaments should fit within the snowman theme, be no larger than 6 inches by 6 inches by 6 inches and come with a hanger that supports the weight of the handmade creation. Ornaments will not be returned.

Recommended source materials include burnt-out light bulbs, cut-up holiday greeting cards, glue and glitter, scratched CDs, empty paper rolls, egg cartons, jar lids, cereal boxes and any other used item destined for the landfill found around the home.

Drop your creations off or mail them in by Friday, Dec. 12, and then come by this season to see the LED-lit Green Tree you helped create.

Contact McDaniel at 895-8059 for more information.

Well, the city falls short of funds, but it looks it will spend millions on the holiday.

O.K., I must be missing something here. You know, the place where it says the city will be spending "millions on the holiday." My mistake. I really thought the city would be SAVING money by putting up a recycled tree and ornaments instead. Guess I need to read a little closer next time.
