Rob Lyons is Murfreesboro’s next City Manager.

Murfreesboro City Council unanimously approved promoting Lyons in the top post in the city’s administration when current City Manager Roger Haley retires in August.

In a surprise move during an update on the national search for Haley’s replacement, Councilman David Edwards moved to end the search in it’s beginning stages and appoint Lyons.

"The search was made in the days after the tornado," Edwards said.

Edwards said he has been reflecting on the months long Linebaugh Library Director search that finally settled on local Rita Shacklett.

“We hired an outstanding director, but it happened to be No. 2 person at Linebaugh,” he said.

Toby Gilley, an early proponent of a national search, said his mind was changed during the Good Friday Tornado aftermath, when Lyons led city services in Haley’s absence.

“Tragedies beget heroes and heroes become leaders,” he said, adding the city should hire Lyons that night.

After fellow Councilmen Shane McFarland and Ron Washington spoke out in favor of Lyons, the council did just that and approved him as Haley’s replacement in a unanimous vote.

“We ended up right where we were in the first place,” McFarland said.

When Haley took the city manger job, Murfreesboro only had a population of around 32,000 and the population has more than doubled in the past 10 years to more than 100,000, according to a recently completed special census.

Lyons was hired as assistant city manager in 1996. He was promoted to deputy city manager last year.

The good ole boy network is alive and well.

Seriously, how can they give no thought to this at all. I just can't believe they didn't look outside the box. New ideas, maybe a new direction.

yep, the good ole boy network. Why did they even initiate a national search? Something tells me that Lyons was the pick all along!! I'm not saying anything against him because I don't know him, but, I think the should have taken time to AT LEAST consider other people.

the good ole boy network has not raised taxes and has expanded services for 14 years in a row. What do you want changed ? Lyons developed the master plan to handle disasters in 2003 - where you not satisfied how the city and the departments worked together during the tornados ? Why should we spend valuable tax dollars to do a search when we have the right man. Give him a year on secret double probation and then terminate him if he doesnt do the job ? Just give the guy a chance. If you look at his past performance, I thihk he will be fantastic.

As City employee I am very pleased with the decision Council made. Mr. Lyons has proven himself over time to be not just a boss but a leader. As a City resident and tax payer I would have been upset with City Council had they not promoted the man who has been preparing himself since 1996 for this position. I have complete faith and confidence that Mr. Lyons will assume his role in the City with enthusiasm and professionalism continuing to move our great City forward.

From what I know of Mr. Lyons, he will do a fine job. The good ole boy is leaving and the new one is coming in. I agree with Poncho, Lyons is a different man with a different perspective. Let's give him a chance. While new out of towners may have some great ideas, Mr. Lyons has the background to understand Murfreesboro's problems and its history so that neither repeats itself. I wish him well.

Rob Lyons has a degree in the field of city management and has done an outstanding job as assistant and deputy city mgr.It would have been a waste of money to seek a better fit for the city.

I'd like to know just exactly how much money the city wasted on their national "search" before going with Lyons...

I don't know anything about the guy, I hope he does a good job, for his sake as well as our own.
