City names new assistant personnel director | City, Charles “Glen” Godwin

Charles “Glen” Godwin
Charles “Glen” Godwin has been appointed as the Director of Human Resources and will fill the vacancy created with the retirement of Personnel Director Sue Mahon.

After reviewing over 50 applications and conducting interviews, City Manager Rob Lyons promoted Godwin, who has been the Assistant Personnel Director since August. Lyons said, “This was an outstanding pool of applicants and Glen was ranked as the top candidate by myself and all of the other interview team members. Additionally, he has already distinguished himself in his short tenure with the City and has shown us the hard work and determination for the position.”

Most recently, Godwin came to the city as Assistant to Sue Mahon, who is retiring.

Prior to joining the city, he was Human Resources Director for RSC Equipment Rental Company where he performed a majority of the tasks to be assigned to him in his new position.

Godwin holds a bachelor of science degree with honors from the University of Tennessee at Knoxville and is pursuing graduate studies toward a Masters Degree from the University of North Florida in Jacksonville. He has been a member of the National Society for Human Resources Management since 1998 and is currently a member of the Middle Tennessee Society for Human Resources Management and chairs the Stones River Middle Tennessee Society for Human Resources Management.

The new Director said he is looking forward to being part of the city’s management team.

“I am very excited to accept the position of Human Resources Director for the City of Murfreesboro and am proud to lead the Human Resources Team” he said. “I look forward to leveraging my experience to working with all City employees in my new role, and to delivering a high level of service.”

As part of this change, the City is renaming the Personnel Department to the Human Resources Department.

“The name change modernizes what we call this very important function in our organization”, Lyons said. “We are so very proud of the dedication, hard work and commitment Sue Mahon brought to our staff and community. She built upon the great work of the department under Sherry Carpenter’s leadership. I know Glen will continue to build upon the great things started by Sherry and Sue.”

Godwin is also a drummer and percussionist and serves as lead member of the First United Methodist Church Praise Team.
