The new state law allows those with handgun-carry permits to carry weapons in recreation facilities.
“Local governments have the option of maintaining the status quo (of prohibition) by voting to do so,” City Manager Roger Haley wrote in a letter to the city council.
Just because you have the power to do so think about the people first!!
For example, law abiding women (or men) who use the greenway and have the right to protect themselves. Do you think the criminals are going to pay any attention to your laws and not bring guns?? They would know that people in these areas are unarmed and make easier targets. Think about it!!

Murfreesboro: Home of the disarmed citizen - where only the criminals have guns!

Only In Murfreesboro LOL.
Like Rutherford Co. Has the crime under control now right? What a joke!
How about helping all the criminals out Rutherford Co. & write letters to all the criminals telling them everywhere Honest Law Abiding Gun owners live & when there not home too.
Like I've always said Murfreesboro is all about the money & the heck with anything or anyone else! Let the body count continue!!!!

I have a close female friend who was assaulted on the Greenway in Murfreesboro in broad daylight. That has always remained on my mind since the day it occured.
Also, take a look at the new "extension" to the Greenway and look at some of the neighborhoods and notice the street names because you will see them frequently in the news.
Legally armed citizens are law abiding people and the last time I checked you want those people around whenever possible. The media makes it seem that anyone can carry a gun to a park like it's a soccer ball or a purse, but that is not the case. It is a select few who are willing to stand up for their rights to protect themselves and their family.

This is Funny Read this artical below
City police investigating vehicle burglaries
Now dont this make sence to keep gun owners from carrying there weapons. They much rather you leave your weapon in your car so someone can steal it. Then maybe someone will lose there life with the weapon that was stolen!

lupusman on 6/24/09
I would like to hear from someone in the police who would analyze the reports of assaults, etc on area like parks, the greenway, etc and provide insight as to if the victim had a hand gun on them, but concealed, would they have been able to use the weapon to defend themselves and would the outcome of the crime been different.

So if the city council passes a "no guns allowed" ordinance for our city parks, then I can call them for assistance if assaulted instead of 911? Seems like pulling out my .45 would be a lot easier and faster. I love it when our government is "here to help"
I hope they vote common sense instead of trying to be politically correct.

Outlawing guns in parks and resterants as the Boro govt. will do sends a message to the thugs that is plain, CRIMINALS WILL TARGET THESE AREAS BECAUSE OF THE INTELLEGENT DECISIONS OF OUR PUBLIC SERVENTS. It never ceases to amaze me the decisions that people in office make, much different than ones they would make if not in a public position.

What bothers me is that if I shoot someone in self defense, I will be thrown to the ground, charged with murder, sentenced to life without parole, or the death penalty, while the criminals down the hall are makeing deals, pleading down, and getting way with just a slap on the hand.
By:

I have in the past, and always will in the future, carry my weapon everywhere I go. Do you really think Mr. Haley or Mr. Chrisman would walk the greenway alone unarmed? It's sad enough that citizens must arm themselves these days in public, even sadder that we will now be forced to break the law in order to protect ourselves. Here's the message I want to send to the criminals: the next time you decide to attack someone, I hope it's me.

We have two newspapers here, both are as left wing as the day is long, yet every comment here is for being allowed to protect oneself (a right wing ideal) It would be nice if the newspapers and our leaders would take notice.

I agree with MrsFroman on this. The criminals will not obey and those who are law abiding will not be allowed to defend themselves. I have the same thoughts with regards to guns in bars/ restaurants. If a law is made to keep them out, only those who are law abiding will leave their guns outside and then a criminal comes in and everyone inside is defenseless. Watch this testimony about what happens in just that scenario: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LTpSygg3D5I

I don't have a permit and probably will never get one, but I do want people to be able to carry legal guns. Guns don't kill people, people do!
This city has no idea what we want. Its what they want and how they can profit from it. I live near Haynes and Thomahawk and I don't understand how this city government works. If our rep works for us then where the hell is my rep, who is he/she. I want him to hear what I have to say.

I know it would provide me great comfort to know that my child while playing at Old Fort Park could become a witness or victim in a gun battle between two honest citizens who decided to take the law into their own hands. Instead of giving budget money to the golf courses how about to the police to keep this nonsense to a mimimum? Or better yet, why do we need the police...we will just let the gun toting, law abiding citizens be the police and then the VA golf course can become the likes of Jack Nicholaus.

A Little Gun History Lesson on Gun Bans by Governments
In 1929, the Soviet Union established gun control. From 1929 to 1953, about 20 million dissidents, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated.
------------------------------
In 1911, Turkey established gun control. From 1915 to 1917, 1.5 million Armenians, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated.
---------------------------
Germany established gun control in 1938 and from 1939 to 1945, a total of 13 million Jews and others who were unable to defend themselves were rounded up and exterminated.
------------------------------
China established gun control in 1935. From 1948 to 1952, 20 million political dissidents, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated.
----------------------------
Guatemala established gun control in 1964. From 1964 to 1981, 100,000 Mayan Indians, unable t o defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated.
------------------------------
Uganda established gun control in 1970. From 1971 to 1979, 300,000 Christians, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated.
------------------------------
Cambodia established gun control in 1956. From 1975 to 1977, one million 'educated' people, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated.
---------- -------------------
Defenseless people rounded up and exterminated in the 20th Century because of gun control: 56 million.
------------------------------
It has now been 12 months since gun owners inAustralia were forced by new law to surrender 640,381 personal firearms to be destroyed by their own government, a program costing Australian taxpayers more than $500 million dollars. The f irst year results are now in:
Australia-wide, homicides are up 3.2 percent
Australia-wide, assaults are up 8.6 percent
Australia-wide, armed robberies are up 44 percent (yes, 44 percent)!
In the state of Victoria alone, homicides with firearms are now up 300 percent. Note that whilethe law-abiding citizens turned them in, the criminals did not, and criminals still possess their guns!
It will never happen here? I bet the Aussies said that too!
While figures over the previous 25 years showed a steady decrease in armed robbery with firearms, this has changed drastically upward in the past 12 months, since criminals now are guaranteed that their prey is unarmed.
T here has also been a dramatic increase in break-ins and assaults of the ELDERLY. Australian politicians are at a loss to explain how public safety has decreased, after such monumental effort and expense was expended in successfully ridding Australian society of guns. The Australian experience and the other historical facts above prove it.
You won't see this data on the US evening news, or hear politicians disseminating this information.
Guns in the hands of honest citizens save lives and property and, yes, gun-control laws adversely affect only the law-abiding citizens.
Take note my fellow Americans, before it's too late !
The next time someone talks in favor of gun control, please remind him of this history lesson.
With Guns...........We Are "Citizens".
Without Them........We Are "Subjects".
During W.W.II the Japanese decided not to invade America because they knew most Americans were ARMED !
Note: Admiral Yamamoto who crafted the attack on Pearl Harbor had attended Harvard U 1919-1921 & was Naval Attaché to the U. S. 1925-28. Most of our Navy was destroyed at Pearl Harbor & our Army had been deprived of funding & was ill prepared to defend the country.
It was reported that when asked why Japan did not follow up the Pearl Harbor attack with an invasion of the U. S. Mainland, his reply was that he had lived in the U. S. & knew that almost all house holds had guns.
If you value your freedom, Please spread this anti-gun control message to all your friends!

When is the media going to do some research like tnlonestar? They pass a carry in restaurants and parks and everyone freaks out. Other states have allowed this for years.
It's not the permit holders shooting up this town. It's not the permit holders committing armed robbery.
Prove to me that crime has increased in these areas in the other states.

"Murfreesboro’s budget for the next fiscal year is balanced with no new taxes or fees but cuts the size of government."
Obviously this quote does not include the Water & Sewer Dept. which is passing on it's fiscal boo-boos in the form of another rate increase. I think that this Dept is also one of the City Managers charges but there is never any "Sunshine" on this topic. Wonder why?
By:
Farmall on 6/26/09
Bota, perhaps you would like to pay CUD rates instead.
By:

The big expense for Murfreesboro W&S customers is in the sewer tax charges not water. Sewer charges are tied to water usage and rate increases for sewer are primarily due to the connection fees for new development not paying for the debt incurred to run lines out to the new subdivisions. The W&S dept has a BIG debt problem. You never hear anything about the City's debt going up year after year all we are fed is how much money Haley has saved the City by using variable rate TML loans. You don't see anything in the papers about the city now switching some debt from TML variable rate notes to fixed rate notes. Rob Lyons announced that the City would use a $1MM winfall to reduce debt. It is refreshing to hear that we finally have someone on board who may be a little more fiscally responsible than Haley.

I'd be all for allowing concealed weapons anywhere anytime, as long as the people carrying those weapons are wearing a big, bright pink button that says "I heart packin' heat." I see it as a win win. Gun nuts can carry their weapons and make a big political statement, neither of the boro's hardened criminals will bother them, and I know who'll buy this amazing bridge I own in San Francisco. Watch out Al Qaeda, the Murfreesboro Pink Militia will be hunting you in the sand traps of Old Fort Golf Course.
The homicide rate in Murfreesboro doubled last year. To 2. I think its safe to holster your weapons.
By:
Farmall on 6/26/09
Water and sewer combined would still be less than I currently pay CUD for water alone. The difference is, one is a city not for profit service and the other is a for profit company.

jg13,
I will be happy to wear the button as long as you will wear a sheepskin so that you can keep your head down following the heard. You are quite the optimist and probably see the silver lining in every situation. I hope that you or your loved ones are never held at gunpoint, raped, assaulted, etc....there may not be many murders but there are plenty of violent crimes that occur everyday in our beautiful little town....If you think different I would be glad to take you starbucks and then we can go visit the jail for a few hours while you get to know a few of our county residents who did the crime and are doing the time.

mhm2a,
We're not talking about the ghettos of South Central LA at 2am. We're not even talking about the rougher areas of Rutherford County. We're talking about public recreation areas. Are you afraid little Timmy is going to jump of the sliding board and assault you? If I were you, I'd be more afraid of a "law abiding permit holder" shooting a ref he though blew a call at his kid's game. Besides, as you can see by this thread, I'm clearly in the minority. So who again is wearing the sheepskin?
