With the deadline to file looming, the field of candidates for Murfreesboro’s April election has become crowded quickly.

Thursday is the final deadline for candidates to file for the April 20 election and the city council race has attracted nine candidates for three at-large seats. Likewise the Murfreesboro City Board of Education race has six candidates for three seats, one of which may be up for grabs.

Incumbents David Edwards, Shane McFarland and Doug Young have qualified to run.

Taking on the incumbents are Madelyn Harris Scales, Bill Shacklett, David Boyce, Thomas Moss, Mark Nobles, and Brian Vaughn.

For the school board, Incumbents Ray Butrum and Mary Wade have qualified to run for re-election, but David Hopper has not picked up petitions yet. Calls for comments to Hopper have not been returned.

Former school board member Patrick McCarthy has qualified to run, as have former Murfreesboro Parks and Recreation Director Dennis Rainer, Kevin Fisher and Eric Newell.

Also, Tim Davis has qualified to run against incumbent Murfreesboro Mayor Tommy Bragg.
