The slate of candidates is set for the April 20 Murfreesboro City Election.

Prospective candidates had until noon Thursday to qualify for the race and a surprising number did just that.

The city council race attracted nine candidates for three at-large seats. Likewise the Murfreesboro City Board of Education race has six candidates for three seats, one of which is up for grabs.

Even the Murfreesboro mayor race has multiple candidates with Tim Davis vying against incumbent Murfreesboro Mayor Tommy Bragg.

On the city council, incumbents David Edwards, Shane McFarland and Doug Young qualified to run.

Taking them on are Madelyn Harris Scales, Bill Shacklett, David Boyce, Thomas Moss, Mark Nobles and Brian Vaughn.

For the school board, incumbents Ray Butrum and Mary Wade have qualified to run for re-election, but David Hopper did not file for re-election. Calls for comments to Hopper have not been returned.

Former school board member Patrick McCarthy is running, as are former Murfreesboro Parks and Recreation Director Dennis Rainer, Kevin Fisher and Eric Newell.

Murfreesboro is one of Tennessee's most progressive, economically vibrant cities with job and business growth during recession, and it's no accident. Please think about that when casting votes....

canalou, I'm right there with you. For all of the complaining that people do about our city leaders, I feel that they are highly qualified and respectable people. We also have a wonderful quality of life, even though people act like we live in a crime-ravaged wasteland.

Debt is due to growth. So do we stop growing and become stagnant or be progressive. I prefer the latter, only wish debt could catch up now.

Now is the opportunity for all those who are unhappy to be heard. Don't like the direction? Here is your opportunity to change it rather than simply complain about it. No one has a divine right to office and the seats belong to the people, not the politicians. Let the voice of the people be heard - vote!
