Ever feel like the only letters in the mailbox are bills?

Well, be prepared to receive the most important bill of the year over the next few days – The Property Tax Bill.

Both Rutherford County and City of Murfreesboro tax bills will be entering a mailbox near you this week with an increase.

The property tax increase brought the county’s tax rate of $2.56 to $2.735, adding $65.63 to the yearly tax bill for the average homeowner with a home valued at $150,000.

The county needed the extra cash to plug a more than $2.4 million hole in its $390 million budget, with shortfalls in many funds, including the general, solid waste and sanitation, and school budgets.

The county requires their part of the property tax to be paid by Feb. 28, 2010.

It can be paid by checks, cash, money orders, credit card and debit card:
• At the County Trustee Office, suite 102 in the Historic County Courthouse on the Public Square in downtown Murfreesboro,
• Checks or money orders made out to the Rutherford County Trustee can be mailed to P.O. Box 1316. Murfreesboro, TN 37133, or
• Online at tennesseetrustee.com, choose Rutherford County.

The county will accept partial payments, Trustee Teb Batey said. Call his office at 898-7705 for more information.

The county has other programs like the senior tax freeze and tax relief programs for lox income seniors, totally disabled homeowners and disabled veterans, which relief the tax burden on some, Batey said.

City tax bills can be paid by Cash, check or money order:
• In person at City Hall, 111 West Vince St., Murfreesboro, or
• By mail, to Po Box 1139, Murfreesboro, TN 37133 or 111 W. Vine St. Murfreesboro, TN 37130.

Since I don't have any kids, can I get a discount?

Mine went up $80, and it valued at 156k. They must use some form of geometric progression.

My kids are all adults now, paying their own property taxes. Can I get a discount too?

PS. I won't hold my breath

I am sick of hearing about budget shortfalls. We need to elected officials who understand "stop spending" and "live within your means." We do it in our private lives, why can't elected politicians do it in goverment?

Don't forget we need our new schools, cause we don't know how to add on to exsisting buildings. And the tennis courts was a "need" at 1.6 mil, go figure.

I am disgusted. I have my property up for sale for LESS than the tax appraisel. I hope the county plans on buying it because no one else seem interested. Found out I am gonna get a 14,000.00 a year PAY CUT. All I can say is the Feds are gonna feel it too. People that make less money, or people that do not have jobs CANNOT pay taxes.

We also got two bills, borobehr, but trust me...I'm only paying one and don't plan to pay it until the very last day!

Murfree (Tax & Spend) boro. We not only want your hard earned money, we are going to continue wasting it.

By: Dave42 on 10/5/09
They probably already have it figured as to what they are going to waste the money on.

Are you listening to your people elected officials. We are sick of you building more things we do not need, spending money YOU don't have and neither do we, and it is time for a change, and not Obama's way either. Start by learning how to budget money and stick to it. It is not really that hard I do it each month. When are we going to get our raises, or in this case our breaks. We do not need anything more built in the Boro for food, recreation, or entertainment. We have PLENTY of good vacant properties that can be used for such things, and learn to build one or two big schools to suffice the students needs (including room to expand on to other schools). BTW it is still possible to build upwards is it not, I believe it used to be called a second floor.

Stop the spending now!!!
