The council set the criteria for searching out Murfreebsoro’s next city manager, settling on qualifications for suitable candidates.
The council decided a on the following qualifications for candidates: a Bachelors degree, with a preferred Masters degree, in government, business, or a related field of study, at least ten years total experience, five of which is in senior level management, and preferred local government experience in a city of at least 75,000.
The council also narrowed down the field of consulting firms to three who have a shot at conducting a national search for Roger Haley’s replacement.
Haley announced last month he will end his 20-year tenure as Murfreesboro’s city manager in August.
The council also decided to move forward with a stimulus grant request to hire up to 18 new police officers.
The council had looked into hiring the entry-level officers in next year’s budget, but with a budget shortfall the funds are not available.
But the COPS Hiring Recovery Program (CHRP), a new program created by President Barack Obama’s stimulus package, offers to fund new police jobs for 3 years.
Deputy City Manager Rob Lyons said the grant has a possible value of $3 million.
CHRP makes $1 billion available for the Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) program, which is estimated to create or save around 5,500 law enforcement jobs nationwide.
The funds can be used to pay 100 percent of entry-level salary and benefits for each officer for three years. All jurisdictions that receive funding must plan to retain COPS-funded officer positions for at least one year after the grant ends.
The council also passed ordinances to rezone areas along Joe B. Jackson Parkway, south of Salem Pike, and along South Highland Avenue.
