Why are you running?

I’ve lived here all of my life and I’m concerned with the direction we are heading.

Businesses are forced to hire attorneys in order to keep their business signs. Our property taxes are some of the highest in Middle Tennessee. The city of Murfreesboro has more than $203 million in debt as of June 30, 2009. Yet we just spent $3.5 million to fix a couple of swimming pools and add a few slides. The Blackman community is threatened with annexation. And our unemployment rate is higher than the state and national average.

I’ve simply had enough. I protested the state income tax in Nashville. I spoke out at both Murfreesboro TEA parties against wasteful spending, high taxation and Constitutional abuse. Now I have decided it’s time to act on my beliefs.

I also believe if eight years was good enough for George Washington, then it should be good enough for city councilmen. Therefore I support and will follow term limits. Have you had enough?

What is your position on district versus at-large representation on the City Council?
I strongly support District Representation.

A specific point of contact would make it easier for citizens to resolve issues and eliminate the possibility of too many council members living in a concentrated area. Representative districts would also make it easier for others to seek office due to lower cost.

I don’t think the council should be expanded to 10 seats however because it would cost the city roughly $50,000 more annually.

What is your position on the economic issues facing the city?
There are three that are very serious and to a degree interlinked; city debt, unemployment and high property taxes.

The city debt is caused by unfunded mandates, legitimate expenditures, a short fall in property and pay roll taxes, and waste.

If we are proactive we can solve some of our own economic problems by cutting wasteful spending, paying down our debt and cutting taxes. This will financially strengthen our city and improve business opportunities by reducing the foreclosures rate and providing the citizens with more disposable income.

What is the most pressing city issue and your possible solution?

Gang activity will become our biggest problem if we do not continue efforts to eliminate it.

Nashville has an estimated 5,000 gang members and gangs have been moving out into the rural areas spreading even more death and drugs. Let our Police Chief meet with the Sheriff and the TBI to formulate a plan and listen to what they recommend and then try to support them.

After all, they are the subject matter experts.
