City approves VA golf lease

The VA golf course got another lease on life Thursday night from the Murfreesboro City Council.

The council approved a short-term contract that expires in June 2009.
The city was seeking a long-term contract from the Veterans Administration to manage and upgrade the 9-hole course.

For the last 20 years, the city of Murfreesboro has managed the daily operations at golf course, but the arrangement was set to end Aug. 31.

The city has run the course under one-year agreements and wanted more security from a long-term lease.

The city would like to irrigate the entire course and upgrade the tee boxes. But the city doesn’t want to invest in improving the course without any assurance that it will continue to run the facility into the future.

Mostly senior citizens, children and beginning golfers play the affordable course and not everyone thinks the course needs to be improved.

The council deferred action on Ordinance 08-OA-40, which will annex a 2.76-acre plot on East Main Street near Twin Oak Drive and rezone it for a multi-family development, after area residents spoke out during a public hearing.

The neighbors fear the proposed development would have a negative impact on traffic on East Main Street, which is a narrow two-lane road.
