Chris Young makes special visit to Oakland | Chris Young, RCS, OHS
Chris Young returned to his Alma Mater, Oakland High School to tour the school and talk about his concert with the Murfreesboro Symphony Orchestra.

At his first stop, the video journalism room, the country music singer sat for an interview with senior Kelsey Bickford of the Patriot journalism staff. Young spoke about his concert, where the Murfreesboro Symphony’s 22 strings will accompanied him.

“They’ve worked out arrangements to some of my songs,” he added. Chris’s upcoming CD release, “Voices”, features a newly released cut entitled “Gettin’ You Home.” When asked about his favorite songs, Young singled out “Don’t Close Your Eyes,” a Keith Whitley song, as the cover tune he never tires of singing in his concerts.

What does Young miss most about Oakland?

“Mrs. Jackson. She once pushed me out of my chair when I fell asleep in her class. It was great. I love Mrs. Jackson,” he said.

When Young battled week after week to win Nashville Star in 2006, OHS English teacher Nancy Jackson never missed a show and never doubted the outcome.

“His voice is smooth as silk and rich as cream,” Jackson said, adding that Young’s responses to selections in class revealed his musical inclinations.

Bickford wondered if the artist missed being a “regular person.” Young smiled and replied, “I think I still qualify as regular person.”

From the interview, Young moved on to tour the school, signing autographs in between visiting with students and faculty.

Young has never forgotten his roots, and his promotional tours and concerts always draw young fans from the OHS student body.

In the coming days, his staff will return to Oakland, offering discount tickets to his concert with the Murfreesboro Symphony – just one of the many perks of being a Patriot and sharing an Alma Mater with rising country star Chris Young.
