MTSU’s free Chinese Film Festival returns on Sunday nights beginning March 27, bringing four films from four regions of the country thanks to the Confucius Institute and the College of Mass Communication.

Each movie will begin promptly at 6 p.m. in Room 103 of the John Bragg Mass Communication Building. Following each movie, Liu Jue, a mass-comm master’s degree candidate, will lead a question-and-answer session.

All movies in the series have English subtitles and are free and open to the public.

The March 27 film, “The Postmodern Life of My Aunt,” comes from the east and is a morality tale told from the viewpoint of an elderly Shanghai woman battling repeated fraud attempts from con men, including her relatives.

China’s northern region is the site of the April 3 film, “Together,” which follows a violin prodigy and his father as they travel to Beijing.

Inner Mongolia and the west are the setting for the April 10 film, “Tuya’s Marriage,” the story of a young woman considering another suitor in the wake of her husband’s disability.

And on April 17, China’s southern region provides the backdrop for “In the Mood for Love” when suspicions of infidelity create a bond between neighbors in a Hong Kong apartment building.

This is the festival’s 12th semester, according to organizer Dr. Bob Spires, professor of electronic media communication.

Founded in 2004, the Confucius Institute is a nonprofit organization established to strengthen educational cooperation between China and other countries. MTSU’s institute celebrated its grand opening in April 2010.
