Charges of aggravated assault and assault on two sheriff’s deputies are pending against a suspect accused of chasing a resident through his house and fighting with the deputies Wednesday, a Rutherford County Sheriff’s supervisor said.

The suspect is not being identified until he finishes treatment at Middle Tennessee Medical Center where he was taken after resisting officers, said Sgt. Chris Kauffman.

Deputies responded to Richard May’s home Wednesday morning on Player Drive off Southridge Boulevard after a neighbor called about a disturbance.

May was working on the suspect’s car when the suspect became upset with May for an unknown reason, the sergeant said. The suspect apparently chased May through his home while armed with a .22-caliber rifle fully loaded with a 30-round clip.

When Sgt. Lee Young and Deputy Will Lehew arrived, they ordered him to put the rifle down but he refused, the sergeant said.

“The rifle jammed, fortunately,” Kauffman said.

While taking the suspect into custody, he actively resisted Young, Lehew and Deputy Trey Nunley, the sergeant said. The suspect allegedly assaulted Young and Lehew who did not suffer injuries.

Deputy Teresa Reed obtained warrants charging the suspect with aggravated assault of May, assault of Young and Lehew and resisting arrest.
