The Rutherford County Chamber of Commerce has named World Outreach Church’s senior pastor Allen Jackson as the 2009 Business Person of the Year.
He will be honored at the Chamber’s “Business at Its Best – 2010 Celebration” on Friday, Feb. 5, at the Embassy Suites Murfreesboro Hotel and Conference Center.
Jackson has worked with the congregation of World Outreach Church since 1981, serving as senior pastor for 20 years. A graduate of Riverdale High School in Murfreesboro, he has been a part of the Middle Tennessee community since 1968.
Under Pastor Jackson’s leadership and vision, the World Outreach Church fellowship, which celebrates its 30th year in 2010, has grown from 150 members to more than 6,000.
“Pastor Allen Jackson is a true business leader,” Chamber President Paul Latture said. “It’s simply amazing how much he has grown the congregation. In a downturn economy, World Outreach Church is continuing to flourish by expanding its facility and adding new jobs.”
Jackson earned a B.A. from Oral Roberts University, a M.A. in Religious Studies from Vanderbilt University and is completing a Doctor of Ministry from Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary in Boston. He also spent a year completing post-graduate studies at Hebrew University in Jerusalem.
Jackson is an active member of his community, serving on the Board of the International Christian Embassy-Jerusalem American Red Cross and the Community Advisory Board of National Health Corporation Nursing Home.
Jackson chaired the Murfreesboro Area Ministerial Association and was named Outstanding Young Minister by the Jr. Chamber of Commerce.
He is a graduate of the Leadership Rutherford. Pastor Jackson is a featured speaker at international conferences, most recently International Christian Embassy-Jerusalem Feast of Tabernacles celebration in Jerusalem.
Jackson is married, and his wife, Kathy, is an active participant in ministry at WOC.
Reservations for the Chamber’s Business at Its Best celebration are $60 members and $80 non-members.
To reserve your seat, contact the Chamber of Commerce at 615-893-6565.
A reception will begin at 5:30 p.m. followed by dinner at 6:30 p.m. Keynote speaker Bryan Townsend will speak on “Stand on It! A Challenge to Take Off the Cruise Control.” |

At first I was a bit taken back at the thought of a church being a business but after I thought about it that may be the case with WOC.

bota, you are right. Look at who all is on the pay roll at WOC, and the flock does as "Pastor" Allen Jackson tells them. There is no "checks and balance" at that facility - odd the following.

I've attended service at WOC a few times and I really enjoy Pastor Jackson's laid back style and simple approach to the Gospel. However, there is one thing that bothers me about that church. Why are they buying up so much land surrounding their already enormus campus. I realize that you can't turn people away that want to attend your church, but why buy EVERYTHING around it? Are they planning to maybe build a school? Anybody know?
It is a little wierd to think of a pastor getting business man of the year. I wonder what he thinks about the honor?

This is awesome! Congratulations Pastor Allen! I'm a member of WOC and i can definitely see why he would receive this honor. He's very concerned about prospering the community that he was raised in and brings a positive influence into this 'college' town.
For example: each year we host a Hoedown on the church grounds and thousands of people from the community come. It's an alternative experience for the Halloween season and has been very succesful at offering a service to some people that would never ponder going near a church! From that one event alone we receive hundreds of curious, interested people that may one day become a member. Thus the reason for the expansion. God is working wonders in that church and i'm proud to be part of it! We welcome anyone to come visit. God bless & Merry Christmas!

This is a wonderful honor for Pastor Jackson. As a member of WOC for over 20 years, I have personally seen the incredible work he does for the church and for the community. He is a man of vision and integrity, and in today's world, that's a hard thing to find.

Of course it's a business....the Lord's business; and as such it's leadership is responsible for being good stewards of it's blessings, just as you and I are called to be good stewards of the blessings God gives us individually.

What a wonderful Christmas gift! Allen is a blessing to this community and continues to serve us right here at home. I can't think of a greater gift than one's light that shines so bright in the community advocating the spirit of God and Peace and Goodwill toward all men. Allen's ministry continues to bless others daily.
God's blessings to Allen and his famiy. May the peace of God continue to be with him and WOC!!!

Willis5038, there is a vision to create a school one day with a campus like atomosphere, so I've been told. He is an excellent speaker and delivers a great message.

Allen teaches character and commitment, but primarily the cross of Christ. He calls on all Christ followers to walk the walk. What you see happening on Salem Hwy is a result of the promises of God. We are salt and light and the Spirit of God is drawing thousands unto Him in a refreshing and meaningful relationship. Allen uses the gifts God bestows on him to glorify the Father and lift the name of Jesus. I am happy Allen was chosen for this honor, but he will be the first to tell you it's not about Allen! It's about the God he serves. Thank you Jesus!

If Pastor Jackson is "Business Person of the Year", does his business pay business taxes? I think the Chamber has opened a new dialogue on if churches are a business, tax it like all other businesses. This includes the parsonage, property and all the homes that the church owns.
Luke 20:25 (King James Bible) And he said unto them, Render therefore unto Caesar the things which be Caesar's, and unto God the things which be God's.

I cant think of a better peron for businessman of the year for Rutherford County, think of all the jobs he created in a down economy with our Church expansion. He not only cares about the Church, he truly cares about Rutherford County. I am a proud member of both World Outreach and Rutherford County. Congratulations Pastor Jackson, well earned and well deserved.

I have been attending WOC since August of 2003. I remember having some reservations about the size of the church and thinking that a church that size must surely be spiritually shallow. I had a very definite pre-existing bias against anything resembling a "mega" church. Well, I'm still there and the reason I am has nothing to do with "following" Pastor Jackson OR admiring his business skills. He preaches the Gospel and does not compromise the Word of God for numbers. I couldn't have remained there otherwise.
As someone who has volunteered regularly in the church office for nearly six years, I clearly see how hard Allen Jackson and our staff work to meet the needs of a very large congregation and to share the love of God in our surrounding community. I've come to appreciate how this goal does indeed require leadership, organization, and people skills, resources, resource management and plenty of hard work. (Much the same as any "acceptable" secular business effort.)
I've heard cynical remarks about WOC prior to reading these comments. But it never bothers me because my experience there has been so positive and I feel there's nothing to defend. I'm thankful to be a part of WOC and have found it to be a healthy spiritual environment. My life has been blessed and enhanced by my community of faith and the many close friendships I have gained through my involvement in WOC.
While I was surprised at first at the honor of "business person" being given to a pastor (even my own!), one cannot deny that it takes business skills to do what Allen does. In six and a half years of regular attendance and volunteering in the church office, I have never witnessed Allen Jackson to be a person of self-promotion. To the contrary, the trait I found most refreshing about him as a pastor was his humility and desire to lift up the name of Jesus. I grew up (elsewhere) in an atmosphere of man-worship, man-following and control. So I would be the last person who would stick around in a place that encouraged such. Therefore, when I read the comment above (by Itsgood) about the "flock" doing as they're told, I had to chuckle. God used Allen Jackson and WOC to help me recover and heal FROM that kind of environment and thinking.

(sigh)......I guess Christians have an imperative to not respond to potshots from Godless sheeple.... But I just love to hear Godless sheeple complain about Christians. Its just too bad that you wont always have the option to get cheese with your wine. Cheese always goes good with wine.
Behind Allen's leadership is a motivated community inspired with a pragmatic message of helping others anyway possible in the name of Christ. A small aspect of this message, would include all the unquantifiable large and small business relationships founded out of sense of developing the courage... "to bring Christ to work today". If there is no way to put a fiscal number of any kind on a messenger's work then you do the best you can. Sorry I had to take this tone, I just feel that when lines are drawn in the sand, Christians also have an imperative to stand up and be heard by everyone. There is just as much danger in silence.
