One thing about track and field – winners abound.
Competitors beat the clock and set records, beat their best time, beat the other competitors or contribute to their team winning. That all happened at the Rutherford County Middle School Track meet hosted by Siegel Middle at Siegel High this past Saturday where 16 teams competed. The Siegel girls finished their season unbeaten as a team and amassed 152 points to win the girls portion of the event while The Lady Tigers of Central, competing for the last time, finished second with 106 points. LaVergne Middle was 3rd and Rockvale was 4th followed by Christiana, Stewarts Creek, Rock Springs and Smyrna. In boy’s action the Central Tigers ran away with the title with 137 points in their last county competition. Rock Springs was second with 75 points, while Christiana was 3rd and Siegel was 4th. Rockvale and LaVergne were strong and finished tied for 5th followed by Smyrna and Stewarts Creek. Andre Hillsman, an outstanding Siegel runner, was not able to run on this day, but he had a fine year and, as a team. Siegel won 2 meets during the year and were only a few points from a 3rd place medal in the County meet. Since they were unbeaten this season, the Siegel girls and Coach Kati Rafacz deserve some special recognition. Out of the 10 track events the Cavaliers took 7 first place medals. The girl’s team is talented and they have depth which likely accounts for the undefeated record. Some high points of the year and the final meet should be pointed out. The All County Award for girls was earned by Kristyn Broughton of Christiana who broke not only the county high jump record but also the long jump record. Hailey Williams and Darby Phillips of Siegel both tied the old county record in the high jump. The All County Award for girls in the sprinting events went to Whitney Tesi of Siegel who won 4 gold medals as she won the 100, the 200 and was on the 4X100 and 4X200 relay teams. It really helped Whitney to have teammates Erica Roberts, Sydni Avant and Madison Louk around to push her on a daily basis. The All County Distance Award went to Nicole Gardner of Siegel who won 3 medals including a county record in the 1600. A 6th grader, Emily Zipay came in second behind Gardner and also finished second in the 800 and won a gold medal on the 4x400 medal relay team. In boys, the All County Field Event Award went to Tyler Smithson of Christiana who had a solid year and is set a new county record with a 6’ jump this year. That’s outstanding. The All County Award for boys in the sprinting events went to Denzel Harding of Central, who was 1st in the 100 and joined Ryan Givens, Chris Stokes and Darryl Hood in winning the 4X200 relay with a new county record. The All County Distance Award for boys was won by Michael Bailey of Central, who won a gold medal for winning the mile run. Next year, Central will not be in this event, of course. but more athletes will be, as Blackman, Buchanan and Oakland Middle are all expected to field teams. |
