The Tennessee Youth Baseball Association turns 25 this season, as part of the celebration the best teams in the state and even some from Alabama converge on Barfield Crescent Park for the 2011 state tournament starting this Friday.
"It will be a fun weekend for the kids," TYBA director Rick Adams said last Saturday during the tournament draw.
The tournament will last two weekends with about 50 teams taking playing during each weekend. It will be broken down into three divisions, coach pitch, kid pitch and for the ladies, fast-pitch softball that will range in ages (3-15 for the boys) and 12 and under for the girls.
The divisions will be further broken down into a rec and open division. According to the league's website, the rec division is classified of teams that play in their respective community league. On the other hand, the open division is teams that can be a mix of all stars, travel teams and others.
The tournament draw took place this past Saturday at the Barfield Crescent Park. Here is how it works: Pool games will be played in each age division on Friday and Saturday. Then on Sunday the single-elimination tournament will be held. First pitch for the games will be at 5 p.m. Friday and 9 a.m. both Saturday and Sunday.
Throughout the tournament's history, it has been played first in Murfreesboro, and then went to Cookeville for many years, and a few years ago Murfreesboro regained the rights to host the tournament.
Several teams from the Rutherford County area will take part in the event. The area teams that will compete this weekend include the Christiana Reds and the Murfreesboro Storm in the (boys 5/6 open), The Rockvale Mudcats, Kittrell Sox and the Lascassas Storm will play in the (7/8 rec). That is just a small example of all of the teams that will try to become champions.
Opening ceremonies will be held at 4 p.m. Friday at the ballpark. For more information about the tournament, including next weekend's action, visit tybaball.com. |
