Read to Succeed celebrates the written word at the sixth annual Reading Rally, which will take place simultaneously at the Smyrna, LaVergne, and Murfreesboro Linebaugh Libraries from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 27.

The celebration is a free and open family event with musicians, storytellers, readers and popular children’s characters – like Max the Bunny at Linebaugh, Franklin Turtle in LaVergne, and Clifford the Big Red Dog in Smyrna.

“The bigger-than-life characters for favorite children’s’ books excite the imagination of young visitors. As much as the live musicians, magicians, and storytellers, the characters help children to believe that anything is possible through the pages of a book,” Read To Succeed executive director Ronni Shaw said.

Complimentary healthy snacks, book-related art projects and door prizes to such local treats as Discovery Center, Bill Taylor’s Bushido School of Karate, and Hastings are available. Each site will also feature a physical challenge such as a Moon Walk.

“These physical activities give the smaller members of your family a nice break from listening to readers and live music, or working on creating a bookmark or other art project,” Shaw said. “Children always need an opportunity to expend some energy, so the blow-up climbing and jumping structures are always a popular spot at Reading Rally. Of course, our book characters are always a big draw, too.”

Special happenings at Linebaugh include balloon animals by Skip Cain, music by the Tennessee Valley Brass Quintet and the Linebaugh Library singers. Other activities include Zoom Zone by The Discovery Center, fingerprinting by D.A.R.E officers, and How-to-Draw station with Kaylea Mangrum.

Special events at the Smyrna Public Library include an appearance from Snowbird, balloon animals by Scott Tripp, selections from The Music Man by Lamplighters Theatre Company, and music by Donna Upchurch.

La Vergne Public Library will feature balloon creations by Buster’s Balloons, music by Kevin Kidd, and Disney Princess and Shrek Fun Jumpers.

Read To Succeed Program Manager Sandra Pineault urges families to come to the Reading Rally site most convenient to them.

“This is a great event for families while placing an emphasis on the importance of reading,” Pineault said. “Bring the whole family for food, music, entertainment, and fun!”
