Burglary and theft charges were filed against a 16-year-old boy accused of breaking into multiple cars early Monday on Ridgewood Drive and Buzzard Branch Drive near Christiana, a sheriff’s deputy said.

The Christiana boy was also charged with resisting stop by arresting Deputy Nick Coble.

Deputy Coble was dispatched to a call of someone breaking into a car about 5:48 a.m. in the Buchanan community. Deputy Jamey Hurst spotted the boy walking on Rankin Drive who dropped a backpack and ran. Deputy Derrick McCullough spotted the suspect on Epps Mill Road who was located and arrested by Coble.

Sheriff Robert Arnold commended the deputies who worked together in locating and arresting the suspect.

The suspect told Deputy Coble he and a friend were breaking into cars in the neighborhood and dropped the backpack because he didn’t want to be caught with it. Deputies searched for the second suspect who was not located.

The backpack contained toboggans and a power cord. The suspect told deputies $43 inside the backpack belonged to him. The $43 and other property were logged into evidence.

Deputy Coble took the suspect to the Juvenile Detention Center where he was booked. A hearing on the charges was set Wednesday in Juvenile Court.

Deputies also recovered additional stolen property and returned the items to owners on Ridgewood Drive and Buzzard Branch Drive. Property taken included coins, text books, stuffed animals, a toothbrush, sunglasses, Polo cologne, two Garmins, bandages, golf glove and a lanyard.

Property recovered and unclaimed included a backpack, chargers, shooting glasses, can of pepper spray, pocket knives, flashlight, necklaces, six mobile phones, cameras, Garmins,  Nintendo, deodorant, cigarettes, lighters, flashlight, nylon belt, eye drops and cigarette papers.

Victims who want to reclaim their property may contact Deputy Coble at 898-7770 or Detective Steve Brown at 904-3052.
