Call her the Queen of Hearts | MCS, Joyce Taylor, Jeanne Bragg, Murfreesboro City Schools Foundation

Joyce Taylor
Many people in Murfreesboro give freely of their time to make the community a better place.

But hardly any have had their hand in as many pots as Joyce Taylor.

“Joyce is the queen of volunteerism in Murfreesboro,” said Jeanne Bragg, chair of Excellence in Education III. “Whether it is through our young schoolchildren, the hospital, or any other of the dozens of organizations she volunteers for, Joyce Taylor’s heartfelt labors have impacted each one of us.”

Taylor has served on boards and in committees and in charity groups that touch nearly every aspect of life in Murfreesboro and Rutherford County.

Her many philanthropic activities are too many to list. But for starters she acts as a Court Appointed Special Advocate for neglected and abused children, she works on multiple boards for Middle Tennessee Medical Center and she was the very first president of the Murfreesboro City Schools Foundation, which will be honoring her many endeavors at the Excellence in Education Celebration III.

About five years ago, MCS Community Relations Coordinator Cheryl Harris and former MCS Director Marilyn Mathis approached Taylor about helping form the Murfreesboro City Schools Foundation.

“They knew I had a granddaughter Piper and that I was very interested in education,” Taylor said, adding Piper is in the second grade at the Discovery School.

The trio worked on the idea and drummed up community support for the foundation, which held its first meeting March 8, 2006. Since then, the foundation has held many fundraisers like Excellence in Education III.

“Every penny that we raise goes to our city schools to fund things that aren't in the budget but add so much to the quality of education in this community,” Taylor said.

Because of Taylor’s work for the community, and city schools in particular, the Murfreesboro City Schools Foundation will honor her at Excellence in Education III on Friday, March 5 at the Stones River Country Club.

Following in its tradition of honoring schools, The Discovery School, Murfreesboro’s school for “high achievers,” is the featured school.

“I'm very humbled to be selected for this honor and more humbled to have received so many kind words from friends and also from people I hardly know – sending notes and calling to congratulate me,” Taylor said.

Aside from volunteering, Taylor’s biggest passion is bridge. (She plays with three different clubs.) And the celebration will reflect this passion.

Playing host to the “Full Flush” pre-party the night of the event are last year’s honorees Ted and Gloria LaRoche at their new NAHB certified Green House on Shannon Drive. The pre-party is open to event sponsors and their guests, as well as guests who contribute an additional $50 to the foundation.

Corporations with local ties are generously purchasing tables for the celebration through corporate sponsorships. The sponsorship levels are: Grand Slam ($10,000), Aces ($5,000) and Kings ($2,500).

Individual tickets may be purchased for $250 each as a contribution to the foundation.

The Murfreesboro City Schools Foundation is a group of civic and business leaders, who banded together to benefit Murfreesboro City School’s 12 primary schools and more than 7,000 school children, and serves as a venue for other foundations and corporations to make significant contributions that can impact the school system as a whole.

The trustees and foundation supporters are leading citywide efforts to bring local resources to bear on local needs, most specifically providing support in the areas of science and academic competition.
