Economic downturns and the approaching Christmas holidays prompted burglars to steal thousands of dollars worth of jewelry and valuables from homes all over Rutherford County, a sheriff’s detective said.
“We always see an increase around Christmas,” said Maj. Chuck Thomas of the Criminal Investigations Division. “Due to the economy, we are seeing an increase in burglaries and thefts.”
Victims and their missing property include:
• Robert Cunningham of Belinda Drive reported burglars stole about $2,600 worth of property, including a laptop, jewelry box, mother’s ring, trucker’s ring, firefighter’s ring, gold cross ring and four rings with religious sayings.
• April Dawn Carver of Sulphur Springs Road reported someone removed more than $19,000 worth of jewelry, including ruby and diamond rings, wedding band, diamond solitaire ring, opal and diamond ring, gold hoop earrings, diamond earrings, gold bracelet with an octopus, gold slide bracelet, ruby necklace, diamond cluster ring, pearl and diamond bracelet and necklace and sapphire and diamond necklace and earrings.
• Susan Vance of U.S. Highway 231 South (Shelbyville Highway) reported burglars took a $15,000 alexandrite Russian cocktail ring, sapphire diamond ring, heart ring, diamond anniversary band, horseshoe ring with band, gold band and $65 cash. Total loss was estimated at almost $18,000.
• Crystal Lee of Baker Road told deputies someone stole more than $4,100 worth of property, including an X Box 360 and games, Nintendo and games, $30 cash, a knife, wedding band, high school class ring, gold mother’s ring, diamond engagement ring and diamond wrap.
• Joe Dela Rosa of Lolita Drive reported burglars stole a gold diamond grill teeth set valued at $3,000, two computers, X Box 360 and games, camera, Play Station games, Bulova watch and nail gun. Loss was estimated at $6,420.
• Cindy Southichak of Renee Drive near Christiana reported someone stole $8,675 worth of jewelry, including a wedding ring with three diamonds and a diamond wedding band.
Thomas asked residents to keep an eye on their property and their neighbors’ property. Call the sheriff’s office at 898-7770 day or night if suspicious vehicles are seen in the neighborhood so deputies can check it out.
