One burglar caused about $1,350 damage to two gambling machines and a door at Kountry Korner market late Tuesday on Old Nashville Highway, a sheriff’s deputy reported.

The burglar used sledgehammer to break open two gambling machines but couldn’t retrieve any cash from the machine, the deputy reported. He swung the sledgehammer at an anytime teller machine but didn’t damage it.

He was unable to leave with money from any of the machines. The crime was captured on videotape and remains under investigation.

gambling machines? thought that they were illegal?!

By: spook on 2/17/10
They might be illegal but just about every little market has them in their back room. Guess the cops don't bother to look that far.

By: koolaidkid on 2/17/10
They're only illegal if they pay out , most don't .

If they don't pay out, how is that gambling?
and if that's the case, why are they called gambling machines?

By: mr.right on 2/18/10
its a gambling machine that doesnt pay out-its just for fun and no big deal people.

By: lunchlady1 on 2/18/10
That doesn't seem like much fun to me.

They only pay out once they determine your not a cop. Its just one of many things our police departments turn a blind eye to.

Why is it always, the cops this and the cops that....Why is it legal to have these machines in stores if there is so much controversy surrounding their "intended purpose". It is legal because our legislators have not seen fit to make them illegal. Poker, gambling, entertainment only, slots, baseball cards machines etc....whatever you wish to call them are shrouded in an atomsphere of illegal gambling but our legislators will not make them illegal to operate. Farmall and Spook your wrong on this one, police do not turn a blind eye, they do not make decisions on what cases get prosecuted and our legislators make this a very ambiguous area for our law enforcement to do anything about.
Really wish people would do a little research before throwing things out there, shows ingnorance and bias including the Mboro Post. Would be nice for the Post to do a little research about this subject matter instead of writing an article from a police report and leaving it at that.

Farmall- If the police turn a blind eye to it, then why would they report the story to a newspaper? If you want to live in a police state, move to China or North Korea.

No, I just happen to see all the prostitution and drug dealing goping on in the hood on a daily basis, work takes me to these areas on occasion.

Could someone explain to me why anyone would drop $20 worth of change in a machine for "fun"? And why sit there all day long? I have personally seen payoffs in a market.

By: mr.right on 2/19/10
why go to an arcade spook? because they enjoy it. why buy xbox, playstations or nintendo wii's? If you have personally seen payoffs in a market, did you report the violation of the law?

By: spook on 2/19/10
Mr. Right - One agency I reported the violation to was only interested in a certain type of payoff machine. Two other agencies busted other markets and confiscated every machine. Selective enforcement.

no spook, the Tn Attorney General has declared that certain machines are legal, such as those that dispense base ball cards and other "goodies". Arrest can only be made if payoffs are discovered in the process of "dispensing" these goodies. So some markets are easier to catch than others. Again TN law should be "either-or"; make them all illegal or legal but so something...
