Thai-Buddhists hope to eliminate fear, mistrust and hatred by inviting citizens to learn about them during an Asian Culture Fair from noon to 4 p.m. Sunday at the temple at 4889 Barfield-Crescent Road.

Some 300 members with roots in Southeast Asia including Thailand, Laos and Vietnam attend the Wat Amphawan of America Thai-Buddhist Temple, Abbott Preeda Momungkun said. The temple opened Oct. 5, 2009.

“In light of the recent and ongoing controversy surrounding the attempt by the Muslim Mosque to expand its facilities, we feel it is important to reach out to the community and encourage people to learn more about each other,” Momungkun reported. “We believe that if people know and understand each other well then fear, mistrust and hatred can be eliminated.”

Jack Butchareon of Bangkok Café serves as ambassador of the event.

Butchareon invited community leaders and citizens to attend the culture fair that includes demonstrating traditional shows from Asia, cooking food and watching traditional dance. Guests may sample food.

No alcoholic beverages will be permitted. Dress is casual. There is no charge.

“Please come to see our culture, taste our food and meet our people,” Butchareon said.

Buddhists don't kill people in the name of their religion. If fact the buddhists neighbors I have are great.

Not much to fear from Buddhists. They don't fly planeloads of people into occupied buildings, blow up subways or go on mass murder rampages.

Buddhists do indeed have a religion of peace.

No, sick people of ANY faith do all that you described. They blow up Olympic parks, Federal Buildings and feed children poisoned Kool-Aid too...

And I remember a Buddhist or two, or three setting themselves on fire to protest the Vietnam conflict.

But learning about each other is never a bad thing, as Schoolhouse Rock always said "Knowledge is Power".
