How cold was this past month in Middle Tennessee?
The first 13 days tied 1942 for the coldest first 13 days of any January on record with an average temperature of 22.3 degrees. The average temperature for the month at the Nashville airport was 33 degrees, which is 3.8 degrees below normal.
Murfreesboro didn’t even make it above freezing for the month with an average temperature of 31.1 degrees.
Also it was the 18th coldest January on record and the coldest since 2003.
The highest temperature was 62 on Jan. 19 and 21 while the coldest was 8 degrees on the 10th.
Total precipitation was 4.13 inches, which is 0.16 inch above normal. Snowfall was 4.6 inches, which brings us near normal for the season.
There were several weather events during the month. On Jan. 7-9, 1 to 2 inches of snow was reported across the mid-state. The icy conditions and the cold became the main story however and schools were closed for two days.
On the afternoon and evening of Jan. 21, numerous reports of hail were received mainly across the east. On the late afternoon of Jan. 24, an EF-0 tornado was reported in northern Robertson County with minor damage reported.
Finally on the afternoon and night of Jan. 29, an average of 3-6 inches of snow was recorded across the area. Sleet and freezing rain became a problem across the south with some trees down and power outages. Two deaths resulted from the storm: one in Franklin County and one in Maury County. For many, including the Nashville area, this was the biggest snow event since the Jan. 16, 2003 storm.
