Youngsters Savannah Sandlin, 9, her 6-year-old brother Wesley, and Maridan Burgess, 10, crooned “Happy Birthday” to one of the county’s oldest residents, Willie Brandon, who celebrated his 103rd birthday Friday.

Brandon simply grinned during the birthday celebration at the Rutherford County Courthouse where fellow county employees and friends wished him well. His wife, Addie, who will be 94 in July, joined her husband.

At age 72, Brandon began custodial duties at the Courthouse, a job he’s held since then. He suffered a fall so he’s been on administrative leave.

Brandon attributes his long life to a higher power.

“God let me live,” Brandon said. “I feel fine.”

Celebrating with the county commissioners and employees is how he planned to spend most of his birthday.

“I love the whole community and God bless them,” Brandon said.

Co-worker Janie Davis has worked with Brandon eight years.

“Willie is an icon,” said Davis. “He’s wonderful. He’s absolutely adorable.”

Since he’s been recovering, Davis has visited him at home.

“What do you do for Willie but take care of him?” she asked.

County Mayor Ernest Burgess described Brandon as “dependable, trustworthy and he’s filled with wit and wisdom. It’s just a joy to talk to him. It’s fun to be around someone who’s positive.”

Burgess helped Brandon walk up the Courthouse steps.

Brandon quipped, “Everything’s quit working but my brain,” Burgess said, adding, “He’s still sharp.”

County Commissioner Anthony Johnson described Brandon as “walking history.”

When attending commission meetings, Johnson said he often arrived early to visit with Brandon.

“He’d tell me stories of the past,” Johnson said. “He’s definitely a role model for anyone — the way he carries himself. He’s just a gentle giant full of life for his fellow man. It’s an honor to have him as my friend.”

Oh, get over it, changejar. Sometimes we as a society should reward those who are loyal and trustworthy throughout their lives. If that means a few extra pennies out of your pocket, so be it.

changejar - do you always spout out the first thing that pops in your head? What a tasteless comment to make about another person just because of their age. I hope you aren't in the position to hire or fire because Lord knows you know nothing about age discrimination.

I cannot imagine anyone saying anything negative about this fine man. Changejar's comments must have gotten deleted!
