The Boys & Girls Clubs of Rutherford County was recently awarded a $40,000 grant from General Mills for their youth fitness, recreation program and Now More Than Ever Capital & Endowment Campaign.
“The General Mills Foundation seeks to improve lives in the communities we operate in by investing in programs and services that target hunger, youth nutrition and fitness, and K-12 education,” said Pat Murphy, General Mills plant manager.
One of the Boys & Girls Clubs’ five core programming area is sports, fitness and recreation that is funded as the Triple Play program. This national program educates boys and girls about good nutrition, making physical fitness a daily practice and developing individual strengths and good character.
“We are so fortunate to have a partner in General Mills,” said Dan Jernigan, chief professional officer of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Rutherford County. “Since the beginning of our club, they have been a tremendous asset to our youth development organization.”
The grant will also provide funding for the Now More Than Ever Capital & Endowment Campaign. Construction on a new Boys & Girls Club facility is underway, and the organization will soon break ground on a teen center in Murfreesboro. The new Smyrna facility is located at the corner of Todd Lane and Culbertson Street and within walking distance of five schools. With the completion of these new facilities, thousands of children will have access to the Boys & Girls Club everyday.
“Although it is unusual for General Mills to support a capital campaign, the Boys & Girls Club mission strongly fits with our community goals,” Murphy added.
The mission of the Boys & Girls Club is to “enable all young people, especially those who need us most, to reach their full potential as productive, caring, and responsible citizens.” To learn more about the Boys & Girls Club and the Now More Than Ever Capital & Endowment campaign or any of their programs, visit www.bgcrc.net or call 893-KIDS.
