Eight members of the Boys & Girls Club of Rutherford County were recognized Saturday for their leadership and service skills, as part of the organization’s annual Youth of the Year competition.

The event, which was held at NHC Healthcare on Vine Street in Murfreesboro, honors Youth of the Year program participants between the ages of 14 and 18 years old who were previously recognized as Youths of the Month.

Chelsee Corder, a junior at Blackman High School, was named the 2011 Youth of the Year. Corder has been a member of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Rutherford County for 10 years.

“For the Youth of the Year competition, the youth prepared packets consisting of essays and recommendation letters,” said Michelle Clifford, who serves as spokeswoman for the Boys & Girls Club. “The packets were reviewed by four local community leaders serving as judges for the competition. On Saturday, each youth was interviewed by the judges and delivered a speech.”

As part of the award, Corder will represent the Boys & Girls Clubs of Rutherford County in the state competition.

“Youth of the Year is Boys & Girls Club’s premier youth recognition program for club members,” Clifford said. “All members benefit from participation in this program, which promotes and celebrates service to the club, community and family, (as well as) academic performance, moral character, life goals, and poise and public speaking ability.”

State winners, who each receive $1,000 scholarships, participate in regional competitions. Five regional winners each receive an engraved plaque and a $10,000 scholarship, and they compete on the national level.

The National Youth of the Year receives an additional $50,000 scholarship and is installed by the president of the United States.
