On Saturday Aug. 2, Boys Scouts and volunteers will join together to build a 25’ high band tower for the Blackman High School Marching Band.

The build is being coordinated by Boy Scout Nick Cucerzan for his Eagle Scout project.

A Life Scout in Boy Scout Troop 340 in La Vergne, Nick chose a band tower as his Eagle Scout project based on the needs of his high school marching band.

Nick, a junior at Blackman and a member of the Blackman Band’s percussion section, saw a need to help his band and the high school. The Blackman High School Band lacked a permanent Band Tower and after watching his band directors on a rented scissors lift the past several years Nick thought that the Band Tower would be a benefit to his school and the community.

When asked why Nick chose such an ambitious project he said: “I wanted to lead a project that benefited the band that our band directors Ms Monson and Mr. Frasier have worked so hard to lead. I also wanted an Eagle Scout project that years from now I can come back and visit and be proud of what was accomplished. I knew it would probably be a long time before our school could have a band tower built.”

Planning for the band tower project began in late 2007 and included getting support along with the approval of school Principal Gail Vick, Band Director Brenda Monson, and the Rutherford County School Board. Donations have been solicited by Nick from Middle Tennessee Electric, Huskey Truss and Building Supply, Blackman Band Boosters, Fastenal Fasteners, Stewart Building Supply and other anonymous community supporters for the project.

Along the way Nick had to research band towers, prepare a plan, solicit help from a draftsman and then a local engineer for the formal plans, submit the plans for state and Murfreesboro Codes approval, and solicit donations of materials and labor for the project.

Nick has been in scouting since the first grade when he entered scouts as a Tiger Scout and progressed through Cub Scouts earning his Arrow Of Light Award (the highest award in Cub Scouts) before crossing over into Boy Scouts in
2003.

He has been a member of Troop 340 led by Scoutmaster Pete Stanulis and has held various leadership positions including Senior Patrol leader, Assistant Senior Patrol Leader, Troop Quartermaster, and Troop Guide to the younger Boy
Scouts. Nick also has worked the past several summers as an Instructor at Boxwell Scout Reservation in Gallatin.
