A grandson accused of pointing a homemade fireball at his grandmother was charged Sunday with aggravated domestic assault, a sheriff’s deputy reported.

The boy previously inflicted serious injuries on his grandmother, Deputy Stephen Lewis reported. He faces an Aug. 10 trial for an arson charge in Juvenile Court.

Lewis responded to the grandmother’s home about 12:20 a.m. on Old Woodbury Highway. She told Lewis her grandson was mad because she would not take him somewhere. She heard a hissing noise.

“Her grandson then started making fireballs with an aerosol can and a lighter,” Lewis reported.

She entered his bedroom and ordered him to stop but he pointed another fireball toward her face. She called the sheriff’s office when he ran away.

Lewis apprehended the boy and booked him into Rutherford County Juvenile Detention Center where he awaits a hearing.

In another case, suspect William Dorris Irwin was charged with two counts of aggravated domestic assault of his wife and son and unlawful possession of a firearm.

Irwin, 40, was accused of threatening to kill his estranged wife last week when she and their son visited him at his Ashmont Lane home. His son begged his father not to kill him. Both the mother and son managed to escape unharmed.

Sheriff’s Deputies Jack Keisling and Randy Morrow apprehended Irwin last week. He was previously charged with assaulting his wife in June.

A hearing is pending in General Sessions Court.

In an unrelated case, a man believed to be intoxicated kicked Deputy James M. Goney early Sunday on Thompson Lane.

Goney reported he saw Jesse Norman Cornwell running out in front of traffic about 3 a.m. in the middle of Thompson Lane. Cornwell approached Goney and cursed him.

When Goney attempted to arrest him, Cornwell kicked him and jerked away.

Goney charged Cornwell with assault on an officer, resisting arrest, disorderly conduct and public intoxication.

Cornwell, 28, of 610 N.W. Broad St. was booked into Rutherford County Adult Detention Center. A hearing is pending in General Sessions Court.
