This month, seniors will have an opportunity to try their hand at virtual bowling in Smyrna, and teens can participate in a special afternoon gaming session in Murfreesboro, as part of the Linebaugh Public Library System’s gaming program series.

Seniors will have an opportunity to do some low-impact “virtual bowling” at Smyrna Public Library on October 10th at 2:30pm, using lightweight controllers instead of heavy bowling balls to pick up a spare. Teen volunteers will be on hand to offer assistance and instruction to those who are unfamiliar with Wii gaming. This free program is for adults age 55 or older.

On October 24, from 4:45 to 8 p.m., teens can team up to play Dance Dance Revolution, Big Brain Academy, or other group challenge games, as part of the Teen Advisory Board’s costume party. Teens are invited to come dressed as their favorite book character; refreshments will be served. The library’s doors close at 5 p.m. on Fridays, so participants should be sure to arrive early. This special after-hours program is offered as part of Teen Read Week. The program is free and open to ages 12 to 18.

This program series is possible thanks to a $5000 Community Building Through Video Games in Libraries grant, funded by the Institute of Museum and Library Services through the Library and Services Technology Act, administered by the Department of State, Tennessee State Library and Archives. Both the Linebaugh and the Smyrna branches will be partnering with the Rutherford County YMCA and the Smyrna Senior Center to offer programs that will be geared for teens (ages 12-18), seniors (ages 55 and older), and families (all ages). Future programs will feature information sessions on the Wii, Dance Dance Revolution and Madden NFL 09 competitions, and other popular video games.
