Justin Bowers hammered a grand slam in the bottom of the fifth inning to propel Blackman to a 5-3 win over Independence in the Blaze's first apperance in the TSSAA Class AAA State Baseball Tournament Tuesday.
Blackman trailed 3-1 with two outs when Bowers' winning shot turned the tables and sent the Blaze to the winners' bracket semi-fianls of the double-elimination tournament Wednesday at Oakland High Schools field against Farragut.
Bowers' clutch hit came after Brandon Goodwin opened the inning with a single. Ross Mitchell reached first on a fielder's choice with Goodwin out at second before Alex Vondohlen to left center, putting runners on second and third. Zander Weil flied out with independence issuing an intentional walk to Jonathan Sico to load the bases with two out.
Neither team scored the rest of the game.
Independence scored one run in the first, fourth and fifth innings.
Blackman's first run came in the second inning when Bowers walked with one out and moved to second when Justin Brewer
walked; Bowers advanced to second and scored one out later when Cade Seeley singled
to right center.
Doug Forte pitched the win, taking over for Blake Harvey who pitched the first four innings. Ross Mitchell came on in relieft int he seventh and struck out two.
