It’s official. The Tennessee Department of Economic and Community Development certified Murfreesboro’s population at six figures.

Murfreesboro planner and special census project manager Robert Lewis said he was gratified the tally reached six figures.

He added that reaching that goal had been a team effort that included several key staff members, those who tabulated the results and firefighters who relentlessly canvassed their zones to those who tabulated the results.

“And we don’t want to forget the residents who participated by submitting their information,” he added. “In the end, they are the ones who will reap the benefits.”

Based on the just more than $112 per head paid back to the city from state collected and shared sales taxes, that translates into more than $2.1 million extra for the city’s budget.

The new population figure represents a 19,192 increase over the 81,393 certified population tabulated during the 2005 special census or about a 23.5 percent population increase during the three-year period.

“The popularity of our community continues to be based on job growth and opportunity,” he said. “Our residents and business community expect, and have built and maintained, a strong vibrant economy surrounded by educational, medical and recreational facilities, second to none.

“This attractive mix,” he continued, “located in a low tax state, is an unbeatable combination for Murfreesboro and Rutherford County.”

How much of this will go toward paying down our $221,000,000+ debt? That's about $221 for everyone that was counted. All Haley ever tells us is that he is getting good interest rates and that there will be no increase in property tax this year. meanwhile he is hocking our future.

This is all I hear; how great we are doing in Rutherford County, how much this will bring in and that will bring in and as we speak The County Mayor wants to take retirement benifits away from county employees. They constantly squabble over new schools and how we will pay for this and that; they do not want to fund departments, they do not want to pay for infrastructure, security. But, I read stuff like this all the time. Sounds more like some bad management over the years with poor planning added to the mix. sick of hearing it. Simple plan, you do not want to pay for growth, quit approving building permits. And yes I do know this story was about the city of Murfreesboro but it spills over to county govt(and eventually M'boro will have to raise their property taxes by 15-20 cents in one year to keep up with this "job growth and opportunity")I rather property taxes increase 1 and 2 cents a year then borrow borrow and borrow, both the county and the city have enormous debt that we are facing. I wish I could afford to run my household this way.
