In order to make sure all the teachers get paid, Murfreesboro City Board of Education has appointed an acting interim director.

The Murfreesboro Board of Education named Finance and Administrative Services Director Gary Anderson to the post at a Tuesday night special-called meeting.

MCS attorney Kelly Baker told the board the system needs to have someone in place by today to sign the paychecks for the next payday, Oct. 2.

“If for some reason we can’t do the interviews, … put in acting interim to bridge gap,” she said.

Anderson agreed, saying someone had to be in place by Wednesday to sign the pay checks electronically, even direct deposit checks must be signed.

“By law … we have to have someone in the director’s position to sign the checks,” Anderson said, adding the signature is needs seven days before Oct. 2, which happens to be Wednesday.

After a brief discussion, the board voted, in a 6-1 vote with Nancy Duggin dissenting, to appoint Anderson as acting interim director until an interim can be found.

Anderson currently acts as director when Mathis is out of town or off work.

The board would like to have an interim director in place when current Director of Schools Marilyn Mathis retires Oct. 1.

The interim director will be responsible for maintaining the system until a permanent director is appointed. The interim will be paid close to Mathis’ current salary, around $10,000 per month.

Applicants for the interim director are:
• Zane Cantrell, a retired MCS educator;
• Carolyn Baldwin Tucker, 30-year educator for Nashville Public Schools;
• Andy Spears, director of policy and research for Tennessee Stand for Children;
• Charles Lindsey, a former Knox County Schools superintendent;
• Paul Doyle, a retired superintendent of schools for Paris Special Schools District;
• James H. Turbeville, a former superintendent for Tattnall County, Ga. Schools; and
• David M. Roper, a former executive director for the Office of Innovative Services for North Carolina Schools in Guilford County.
