Boro safe from higher taxes for one more year

Murfreesboro City Council approved the more than $93 million budget, which includes no new taxes at its meeting Thursday night.

The budget for fiscal year 2008-09 sees a 4.59 percent increase over last year, adding more than $4 million in revenue with no increase in taxes.

Under the budget, Murfreesboro adds 62 new jobs including 36 new police officers and 15 fire fighters, according to a letter from City Manager Roger Haley to the mayor and city council.

Current city employees will also see a 4.5 percent raise, as well as an increase to the pension fund. The city will increase employer contributions to health insurance keeping the current 80 percent-20 percent schedule.

The council will also approved Murfreesboro City Schools budget for next year, which totals more than $52 million and adds 18 full-time and five part-time employees.
