A Murfreesboro man is being held in Catoosa County Jail after authorities said he held a cab driver at knifepoint and forced him to drive 100 miles to Ringgold, Ga.

Steven Frazier Knowles has been charged with aggravated assault, kidnapping and theft.
Knowles was taken into custody when a Catoosa County firefighter spotted him with a thermal imaging camera late Monday night.

He is accused of kidnapping William Boller, a driver for City Cab Co., 1120 W. College St.
About 6 p.m. Monday, a Boller picked up Knowles in Murfreesboro at Howard Johnson motel for a ride to the Nashville Airport.

Boller told Murfreesboro Police that once in the cab, Knowles said he needed to pick up his brother in the Buchanan area.

At some point between the motel and Buchanan, Knowles allegedly pulled a knife on the cab driver and told him to drive to Chattanooga.

Shortly after 10 p.m. as they traveled south on Interstate 75, Knowles told the driver he was thirsty. The driver pulled into a Kangaroo gas station near Ringgold and stopped.

Boller then ran into the station and behind the counter and employees called 911.

Knowles chased Boller into the store but fled when an employee hit the store's panic button to alert police.

Knowles surrendered to Catoosa County police about an hour later after he was located hiding in the dark still armed with the knife. He is being held in Catoosa County.

Mr Knowles would frequently show up at MT athletic events while intoxicated. He has a problem that needs curing.

I'm familiar with the family and have seen Mr. Knowles intoxicated at his child's baseball games. To say that he has a problem is an understatement. I understand that he is terminally ill. Its sad, but I think that this situation was just "the perfect storm" so to speak. As I understand it he was distraught over a recent Domestic Violence arrest and all the personal issue that followed. It always hurts to see someone hit bottom. I'm not defnding Steve's actions, but I think that its imppossible to know how we would react if everything that we have known is gone. Some people just aren't preapared for when the rains come. I think that the saddest thing is that he will spend what little time he has left not with his family, but in jail. I hope that his son can remember some of the good times with his dad and not all of this. I hope that your thoughts and prayers are with the family and Mr. Knowles. I know mine will be.

It is very sad that Steve did not get help for his problem. Sober he was always a very nice person. My prayers will be for him, his wife and son.

I hope that he does not have a fatal illness. I cannot imagine that he would think of harming someone if he was in his right mind.

Everyone deserves a second chance. I hope he receives one.
