Dr. Rebecca Baskin
The American Cancer Society has selected Dr. Rebecca Baskin to serve as honorary chair for this year’s Relay For Life of Rutherford County.

Baskin, a general surgeon, known not only for her professional expertise but for her compassionate care, brings a unique perspective to this year’s Relay For Life event.

She knows first-hand what it’s like to hear the words “you have cancer.”

During a routine self exam she found a suspicious lump in her breast. A biopsy confirmed a diagnosis of breast cancer. She subsequently underwent surgery and chemotherapy. At the time, Baskin’s children were just 4 years old and 5 months old. With the dedicated support of her husband, mother, friends and family, she finished treatment and returned to work at the Murfreesboro Medical Clinic where she and her partners have established the Comprehensive Breast Center.

Baskin is a life-long resident of Rutherford County.

She graduated from Oakland High School, attended David Lipscomb University and graduated from ETSU Medical School in Johnson City. She completed her surgical residency at Good Samaritan Hospital in Cincinnati before returning home to Murfreesboro.

Since her own cancer diagnosis and treatment, “breast health evaluation and surgical procedures have become my passion and the majority of my practice,” Baskin said. Those who work with her can attest to her dedication and commitment.

“We are thrilled to have someone as devoted to the fight against cancer as Dr. Baskin serve as our Honorary Chair for this year’s Relay For Life of Rutherford County,” event Chair Janice Millsaps said.

Relay For Life is the American Cancer Society’s signature event.

It is designed to celebrate the lives of those who have battled cancer, remember those lost to cancer and to empower individuals to fight back against the disease. This family-oriented team event brings participants from all parts of the community together in a “celebration of life.”

Businesses, civic clubs, churches, friends and families take turns walking in relay fashion around a track for the length of the event. Teams are involved in fund-raising prior to the night of Relay as well as during the event.

The Relay For Life of Rutherford County will take place at Siegel High School on May 21st. To register call your local American Cancer Society at 615-341-7324 or visit relayforlife.org/rutherford.

Dr. Baskin is wonderful. Too bad she works for MMC.

My children have been going to MMC for 18 years total thus far. They have always been wonderful and caring. My OB/GYN is there too and I think he is amazing. Too bad you have had a bad experience with MMC, because they have been of great help and very supportive of my family.
