Middle Tennessee has received a bye for the first round of the Sun Belt Championships and will be the East Division’s two seed when play opens on Saturday, March 5 as announced by the league office.

The Blue Raiders (15-15, 10-6) locked up the bye with their 57-39 win over Western Kentucky last Saturday.

Middle Tennessee will play the winner of FIU and Denver on Sunday, March 6 at 9 p.m. in the quarterfinals at the Sun Belt Championships in Hot Springs, Ark. It is the same scenario the Blue Raiders had last year in their opening game at the conference tournament.

It will be the third time Middle Tennessee could face Denver in its first game at the Sun Belt Championships. In 2005-06 and last season Middle Tennessee fell to the Pioneers in its first tournament game. Middle Tennessee has never played FIU in its first game at the Sun Belt Championships.

Middle Tennessee is on the same side of the bracket as West Division champion Arkansas State. If the Blue Raiders were to face Arkansas State in the tournament, it would not be until the semifinals. The Red Wolves, who also have a first round bye, will play the winner of UALR and South Alabama in the quarterfinals on Sunday at 8:45 p.m.

Middle Tennessee posted a 4-3 record against its side of the bracket during the regular season.

Florida Atlantic, who won the East Division, and UL-Lafayette received byes on the opposite side of the bracket. On that side, UL-Monroe will play Western Kentucky in its opening round game while Troy will face North Texas.
