RANCHO SANTE FE, Calif. - Middle Tennessee shot a 298 to tie for eighth place on the opening day of the San Diego Regional at the par 72, 6,947-yard Farms Club course.
The Blue Raiders could not stay away from the big numbers on Thursday but still find themselves only four shots out of fifth place. The top five teams move on to the National Championship beginning May 31 in Stillwater, Okla.
"We made a couple of big numbers today that really hurt," said head coach Whit Turnbow. "However, we are still firmly in the game. We just have to bounce back Friday and I am very confident we will."
Southern Cal fired a 10-under par 278 to grab the first round lead while Texas and UCLA are tied for second at 1-under par. Fellow Sun Belt Conference foe North Texas is fourth at 5-over par and host San Diego is fifth at 6-over par.
Senior Jason Millard and freshman Brett Patterson carded even par rounds of 72 and are tied for 17th overall. Both players had three birdies on the day.
Freshman Paul Sansom is tied for 44th after posting a 76 but his day could have been a lot better. The Russellville, Kentucky native was even through 17 holes before suffering a nine on the par 5 18th.
Junior Hunter Green had an up-and-down day with a 78. The all-conference performer is tied for 57th.
Junior Brad Simons, who missed the Sun Belt Championships due to disciplinary reasons, is tied for 73rd after turning in an 83. Simons struggled on his opening nine but played the back side even par.
The Blue Raiders will begin the second round on Friday beginning at 10:50 AM Central.
