BLOG: Pro athletes waste time on reality TV

With all of the talk this week about the beginning of the college football season, another big announcing took place and some athletes will take part in a well-known reality TV show.

The cast of Season 13 of “Dancing with the Stars” was made public, and of course it is full of people who think they are celebrities and some athletes who do not need to participate in the show for many reasons.

This season is no different with wanna-bees like Nancy Grace, one of George Clooney’s ex-girlfriends, and many others. Also, you cannot have the show without a couple of athletes. This time it is U.S. women’s soccer team goalie Hope Solo and Los Angeles Laker Ron Artest.

I’m not a big fan of the show, and I hate most reality shows. This one is no different. Most of the viewers are the same ones that sometimes do not live in the real world. For example, they are more worried about whether the Jersey Shore home was damaged during last week’s Hurricane Irene, than the everyday people who were flooded out by the same storm.

Get a life, bro.

I cannot understand why these athletes in many different sports waste their time and energy trying to gain new fans who could not name anything about the sports they participate in.

Sports stars have done well, including six winners and four runner-ups in the history of the show, including last season’s winner Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Hines Ward. However, most viewers of the show probably cannot name what league the Steelers are in. What is the point of the doing the show to gain new fans and expanding the name brand, when after they are done those same people could care less?

For example, season five winner and three-time Indy 500 champ Helio Castroneves did not gain any new fans for the auto racing series. I bet most of those DWTS viewers did not watch the IndyCar race in California last Sunday, and knew that he finished runner-up in the event.

Out of the six winners, three of them are former Olympic gold medalists, Apolo Ohno, Kristi Yamaguchi and Shawn Johnson. However, it was pointless for them to go on the show and risk injuries like what happened to another DWTS cast member and Olympic gold medalist Misty May. She had to leave mid-season, because of an injury.

During the 2010 Winter Olympics, my mom watches DWTS, but I could not get her to watch the Games until I told her Ohno was skating. Then, she paid attention.

At the same time, the time Ohno took off to participate in the show hurt his skating performance.

Between his performances in the 2002 and 2006 Winter Games, in which he won gold in both Olympics, he looked like one of the top racers. Last year, however he was struggling to earn a bronze and I think his time on DWTS hurt him in the long run.

I have no problem with retired athletes taking part, but those who are still playing need to stop trying to attract fans who will never watch their sport. Instead, they need to work on performing better for the teams that pay their contracts.

Leave the dancing to those people who are still trying to extend their 15 minutes of fame, even though their time ran out a long time ago.
