Blog: Bonnaroo taken slow and easy still a great time

A near sellout crowd of scantily clad and tattooed people from across generations waded through the mild and warm sun to party!

They, as well as myself, started the first full day of the annual Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival easy as we got our bearings and finalized our schedule. And made our way through the mud — big theme of this year’s fest.

I wanted to see as many bands as possible but the large crowds and sun made it difficult.

I officially got my day started with a mellow set from alt-country singer Tift Merritt. I then headed over to listen to a portion of an electronic pop set from The Dirty Projectors.

One of the only things that sucks about Bonnaroo is that you can never see every artist that you want to see. You want to see your favorites, but then at the same time you want to see something new as well. The Dirty Projectors was a newbe for me.

Later in the day, Karen O proved she is one of the best rock and roll front women today with the Yeah Yeah Yeah’s hard-hitting set. It even featured an acoustic version of “Maps” (one of my favorite Yeah Yeah Yeah’s songs of all time) due to a technical difficulty.

I sat in the grass and listened to Ani DiFranco Friday evening until I felt compelled to walk around Centeroo and look at all of the items for sale. Everything from tie-dye (everything), artist tees, jewelry and artwork, of all sorts, were available for purchase.

I gave in and bought a Yeah Yeah Yeahs T-shirt as a souvenir.

Then, I was going to wander around until David Bryne that evening but then I heard the sound of hometown darlings The Features playing at the Troo Music Lounge. I had to stop and give them a listen. They played a tight set for a small, loyal crowd.

Highlights:

Getting to shake the hand and speak to one of my favorite artists right now, Madi Diaz. I’ve been listening to her new EP “Ten Gun Salute” over and over again. She seemed pleased and surprised to know that I loved it that much.

And, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs — I expect that show to be a highlight of the entire festival.

Bonnaroo continues through Sunday.

I heard there were not as many people this year with the $200.00 ticket and the NO TENT rule. All you have a nice time. Saw at least 50 people pulled over at Joe B Jackson and everything they had in the cars pulled out on the side of the interstate.

Although this is not my thing, I was pleased to read that the festival had a $20mil impact on Coffee Countt!

What no tent rule? I was there and there were thousands of tents (including mine)!

Bonnaroo was great and I can't wait to go back next year.
