Blackman squeaks by La Vergne in boys basketball final

It was a clean sweep for Blackman Tuesday night as the Blaze barely beat La Vergne 55-52 to win the 7AAA Boys Basketball Championship.

Blackman turned it over 13 times to La Vergne’s 10 and the Blaze ran away with the rebound battle 26-14.

Balanced scoring was the name of the day as Blackman’s Alec McMiller had 13 points followed by Terrance Smotherman’ s 12 and Darius Thompson’s 11.

To complete the sweep, Blackman Coach Barry Wortman was named Coach of the Year and Darius Thompson was named the District 7AAA MVP and also 7AAA Tournament MVP.

La Vergne’s Caymon Dial led all scorers with 20 points and Doloran Sparks had 12.

Both Blackman (22-3) and La Vergne (17-12) will host a regional game at 7 p.m. Saturday. Blackman will take on the Columbia Lions (13-17) and La Vergne will play the Lincoln County Falcons (17-11).

In the consolation game on Tuesday night, Siegel held off a hard charging Smyrna Bulldog team – that scored 32 points in the third quarter alone – to win 76-75 and take third place. Both squads had 19 turnovers, while Siegel narrowly won the battle of the boards 33-31.

Both squads will travel in the regions first round. Smyrna (17-15) will travel to Tullahoma (18-7), while Siegel (18-10) will take on Lawrence County (11-16).
