Blackman is impressive on both sides of the ball.

The Blaze just destroyed Lincoln County 55-14 and it was really worse than that with the mercy rule in effect for most of the second half.

The Blaze dressed 92 players and took no prisoners.

On defense at least 20 different players combined for tackles, assists, forced and recovered fumbles, sacks and knocked down passes.

Jess Patton led the way with 12 tackles and/or assists but he had lots of help from Jake Armstrong, Hunter Thompson, Matthew Stubbs, Daniel Lee, Aiden Chavez, Brant Luker, Ryan Davenport, Tyler Rucker and a cast of, well, lots of people in home uniforms.

On offense, I’Tavius Mathers scored on a 68-yard run before part of the huge crowd had settled into their seats.

When Jason Puhr’s extra (he hit seven of eight on the evening) went through the uprights with only 22 seconds gone, the game was over.

We didn’t know it at the time, but with Lincoln County fortunes at the lowest ebb in years, the game was over.

I’Tavius had 105 yards rushing in the first quarter and finished with 262 yards and three touchdowns.

Fast improving quarterback Tyler Strickland had a solid evening with eight of 12 passing for 105 yards and two TDS, both to Thahal May and Strickland also scored himself on an 8-yard run. John Fuller scored Blackman’s second TD on an excellent 26-yard run in the first quarter and Dee Mathers had a 36-yard TD late in the game.

The Blaze finished with nearly 500 yards in offense, 12 first downs and they scored in every quarter.

They travel to Smyrna next week for the state’s best game.

Middle School Volleyball

So far Siegel has dominated the league and are 20-1 overall and 7-0 in league play.

All challengers have fallen short of the Cavaliers.

Their net play has been solid, jump serving is very good and, although they tend to lose focus on occasion, they generally get down to business at crunch time.

I finally got to see Rockvale and Oakland this past week and got to attend my first athletic event at the beautiful Whitworth-Buchanan Middle.

Some of the outstanding volleyball players I saw this week include Cassie O’Bryan, Mattie Woodruff and Mary Barnes of Christiana, Hunter Hughes, Holly Shirey, Alex Fait and Hannah Prince of Oakland, Rachel Clement, Mirnada Cohen and Samantha James of Rockvale, Tori Simmons, Jiliam Morgan and Emily Stockstill of Siegel, and Cynthia Christie, Taylor Harrell and Ashley Duffala of Buchanan.

This is the time of the season when teams either level off or start showing considerable improvement.

Christiana Coach Jackie Crawley Harrison thinks her team is really coming on in the middle of the season.

She’s right, her squad won it’s second match Thursday and later fell to 7-1 Oakland two games to one in a close match 18-25, 25-23 and 12-15.

Buchanan is also getting better as the season progresses, scores are getting closer and the quality of play is improving for the Yellow Jackets.
