BIZARRE IN THE 'BORO: Police puzzled by false fire claims

For nearly a month, Murfreesboro police have been trying to figure out why a woman has called 9-1-1 multiple times saying various buildings are on fire, even though none of her claims have been true.

The most recent incident occurred Jan. 18 when the 49-year-old woman called about 9:30 p.m. to tell authorities that the Shoney’s Restaurant on South Church was on fire.

When dispatch determined this was the same woman who had claimed it was on fire earlier in the day, Officer Randall Gaines went to her South Church Street residence in reference to a welfare check.

“I was sent to check on (the woman) because she called in twice on this date stating that the Shoney’s across the street was on fire and people were screaming,” Gaines reported.

“A call history showed that (the woman) has made eight similar calls in to 9-1-1 since the beginning of January,” Gaines reported.

Given the situation, Gaines notified officials with the Rutherford County Emergency Management Services so the woman could be examined.

“Emergency medical personnel deemed that (the woman) was not a danger herself or others,” Gaines reported, “and she refused treatment.”

Because the woman would not allow emergency responders to admit her to the hospital for a more in-depth mental evaluation, police and medical personnel had to leave the scene.

As of Friday, the woman was not facing any charges in connection with the incident, most likely because officials suspect she is in need of medical care, and the matter remains under investigation.
