A 22-year-old woman became so angry Tuesday after a self-checkout machine at Kroger misidentified a $20 bill that she allegedly threw the cash refund at a Murfreesboro detective – all while yelling racist remarks at the employees.

“I was at Kroger on Middle Tennessee Boulevard when a black female said she had put $20 in the register, (but) it was showing $2.07 instead,” Sgt. Tim Higgins wrote in a Murfreesboro Police Department arrest report.

Higgins then spoke with the manager, who agreed to review video surveillance footage of the transaction, at which point both determined the woman was telling the truth.

“The manager attempted to speak with (the woman), but she became irate,” Higgins reported, adding the woman then started cursing and using racist gestures, including the terms “crackers” and “honkeys,” as she yelled at them.

Due to the woman’s behavior, the manager quickly pulled $2.07 out of a register, handed the money to Higgins, and told her to leave the store, in an effort to diffuse the situation.

“After getting outside, the descriptive (remarks) continued,” Higgins reported. “I attempted to hand her the money, (as) she implied that I should f*** myself. She then stepped off the concrete into the parking, and I placed her money on the ground and stepped back. She came back, grabbed it, and threw it at me.”

When the money struck him in the chest, Higgins reported he immediately placed her under arrest and requested a patrol officer to come to the scene, so that woman could be transported to Rutherford County Adult Detention Center on one count of simple assault, as well as a disorderly conduct charge.

“While waiting for the transport,” he reported, “she commented that she would not have created a big scene over nothing.”
