Bill to shorten emissions-testing waits passes key committee

A bill to allow the use of remote sensor to test the emissions of vehicles passed the House Conservation and Environment Committee today.

The bill authorizes air pollution control board to provide inspection and maintenance program in certain counties, including Rutherford, using enhanced technology of remote sensing devices, and extend certain program contracts, to comply with air quality regulations.

The legislation would allow for counties to place remote sensors along roadways and test emissions from passing cars.

“If a vehicle meets the air quality criteria determined by the board through the remote sensing device, then the present law requirement for an annual emissions test may be fulfilled without the need for passing vehicles to also visit an inspection and maintenance inspection facility,” the bill states.

The bill passed the state senate last week in a 25-4 vote, with local Senators Jim Tracy and Bill Ketron voting in favor.

I always take me a picnic lunch and a gallon of tea. I can wait all day and leave full and happy.

It's hard to believe this "remote" testing is as accurate as having each vehicle tested once a year. Well we have cars out there with bald tires, severely cracked windshields, no brakes, headlights and tail lights out, etc. and 40% of them have no insurance, so why worry about a little thing like emissions!

That is funny, yet true lupusman.

I think the emissions test is a joke. Had an '87 Jeep that had the catalytic converter gutted because the insides fell apart and it passed with flying colors. I think there should be a safety inspection if they are going to have a procedure to generate revenue. There are a lot of unsafe vehicles on the road in Rutherford Co.

It has never been about the Emissions. Just the money. You ever saw the money picked up by the armour car? Glad to hear a car without a catalytic converter will pass though .
