Murfreesboro’s oldest martial arts school is expanding.

Bill Taylor’s Bushido School of Karate will have a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 11 a.m. Aug. 27 at 1911 Business Campus Drive. The Rutherford County Chamber of Commerce will also take part in the event.

On the following day, the school will be hosting a “Back to School Bash” that will run from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the new location. Several activities will take place including a dunking booth, live music, a silent auction, a bouncy house, cakewalk and gifts for the non-students.

“This is a great opportunity for us to give back to the community,” Bill Taylor, owner and chief instructor of the school said.  “With families getting back into school schedules, we wanted to show them how much we appreciate our community by providing a lot of fun. We also wanted to show some serious instruction coming from world class, martial artists.”

Three world champions in kickboxing and boxing will also take part in the event. Those guests including boxing champion, Gene Hatcher and kickboxing champion Dale “Sunshine” Frye.

Hatcher, known during his career as “Mad Dog”, had a career record of 32-7, including 23 knockouts. He won the WBA World light welterweight title in 1984. His final fight came in 1995 with a win over Juan Martin Galvan.

The third guest is who Martial Arts Digest called “the greatest all around fighter in history,” Troy Dorsey.

Dorsey, who is former world champion in three different fighting disciplines, will also conduct a seminar.

His career marks include winning eight world champions and he just earned an 8th degree black belt June 18. He is the only fighter to win titles in kickboxing, boxing and karate during a career that spanned the 1980s and 1990s.

During his boxing run, he once fought former Olympic and five-time world champion, Oscar de la Hoya. Currently, Dorsey runs a karate studio in Texas.

Also, a free Bully Buster Class will be offered, but the enrollment limit is 40. The number to register is 890-6755 or 893-6003.

All events are free to the public. Proceeds from the event will go to the Murfreesboro Domestic Violence Program.

Taylor’s studio has been in existence since 1972 and was first one ever built in the area. His other location is on 1820 NW Broad St.
